Basket Weaving at THE KENT 10/5
Basket Weaving Workshop at The Kent
Date: Sunday, October 5th
Time: 10am-3pm (there will be an hour break to explore the Exhibit and eat lunch, please bring your own food)
Join Alexa Rivera of WOVN.COUNTRY for a hands-on basket weaving workshop in collaboration with Art at the Kent’s exhibition "Holding: Mementos Kept, Memories Kindled". This basketry intensive explores the basket not only as a functional vessel, but as a sacred container for stories, keepsakes and remembrance. Participants will learn foundational basketry techniques, while examining what we carry, and the ways in which the physical basket and the act of weaving are holders- of object and tradition. All participants will make and leave with a finished basket and skills to make more in the future.
No experience necessary. All materials provided. Please reach out to Alexa for permission for weavers under 18 years old.
We encourage participants to bring something personal to weave into their basket- a scrap of fabric from a loved ones old clothing, a length of ribbon from a special occasion, a strip of old sheet music or letter, a shoelace from a memorable hike or journey, a snippet of a map from a special place, a strand of embroidery floss in a meaningful color, a vine from your favorite tree- and on and on- the possibilities are endless.
We will be weaving outside, weather permitting. Please reach out with any accessibility concerns.
